How to Automatically Backup Your WordPress Site
Your website is a business asset. Like any asset, it needs to be protected. A backup is your insurance policy against the scenario every website owner dreads: waking up to a hacked, broken, or deleted site with no way to recover.
The question is not whether you need backups. It's whether you have them.
What a WordPress Backup Must Include
A complete backup consists of two parts:
- Database — contains all your posts, pages, settings, users, and comments. Without this, all your content is gone.
- Files — contains your WordPress installation, themes, plugins, and uploaded media (images, PDFs, etc.)
A backup that includes only the database or only the files is not a complete backup.
The 3-2-1 Backup Rule
- 3 copies of your data
- 2 different storage media (e.g., server + cloud)
- 1 copy stored off-site (not on the same server as your website)
If your backup is stored only on your hosting account and your host has a server failure or terminates your account, your backup is gone along with your site.
Best WordPress Backup Plugins
UpdraftPlus (Free + Premium) — Most Popular
UpdraftPlus is the most-installed WordPress backup plugin with over 3 million active installations.
Setup:
- Install and activate UpdraftPlus
- Settings → UpdraftPlus Backups → Settings tab
- Set schedule: Daily for database, Weekly for files (adjust to your publishing frequency)
- Choose remote storage: Google Drive, Dropbox, Amazon S3, FTP (free options available)
- Click "Backup Now" to test immediately
Free version covers all essential needs. Premium adds incremental backups, multi-site support, and more storage options.
BlogVault — Best for Peace of Mind
BlogVault stores backups on its own servers (independent of your host) and provides one-click restore. Paid from €7.4/month — worth it for business-critical sites.
Duplicator — Best for Migrations
Duplicator creates a complete site package ideal for both backups and moving your site to a new host.
ManageWP / MainWP — For Multiple Sites
If you manage multiple WordPress sites, these tools allow centralised backup management across all sites.
Your Hosting Provider's Backups
Many hosts (Kinsta, WP Engine, SiteGround) include automated daily backups. These are a valuable addition, but should not replace your own backup system — you want multiple independent backup sources.
Backup Frequency Recommendations
| Site Type | Database | Files |
|---|---|---|
| Blog (daily posts) | Daily | Weekly |
| E-commerce (daily orders) | Multiple times daily | Daily |
| Brochure site (rare updates) | Weekly | Monthly |
| Under active development | Before every change | Before every change |
Testing Your Backups
A backup you've never tested is a backup you can't trust. At least twice per year:
- Download a backup copy to your local computer
- Restore it to a staging environment
- Verify everything works
Automated Restoration
When disaster strikes, you need to restore quickly. Ensure you know how to restore from your backup before you need to. UpdraftPlus allows one-click restoration from within WordPress admin.
